Prof. Barnabas C. Madu

Born in the family of late Mr. & Mrs. John Okehi Madu of Umulaezike, Ujah, Umuowa in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Attended primary school at St. Mary’s Primary School, Umuowa, Orlu. He went to Community Secondary School Awo Idimili in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. After his Secondary Education, he taught for eight months at Community Primary School, Mdiakaeme Ohiauchu in Aro Ndiziogu before entering Teachers Training College Azaraegbelu in Owerri for one year for pivotal teachers’ training. He graduated from the TTC in 1976 and was posted to Saint Saviors Secondary School, Umuaka to teach science subjects. He taught for one year and entered University of Ilorin, Ilorin for his degree programme in Physics Education in 1977. In 1981 he got his B.Sc. (Ed) Physics Education and was posted to Ogun State College of Education Ijebu Ode, Ogun State for his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) from August 1981 – July 1982. After the Youth Service he got an employment with Federal Ministry of Education and was posted to Federal College of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State. He went to University of Jos, Jos for his Master’s degree  programme in Science Education. After the Master’s programme he moved to University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State where he established Department of  Agric and Science Education. Later he went to University of Nigeria, Nsukka for his Ph.D in Physics Education/Measurement and Evaluation. Before he finished his Ph.D programme, University of Nigeria gave him appointment as lecturer two in 1998 to take care of Physics Education programme in the Department of Science Education. At University of Nigeria, he rose to the rank of Professor of Physics Education and Measurement Evaluation in 2011. Prof. B. C. Madu has been occupied with teaching from Primary – Secondary School – College of Education – University which involves guiding both young and old to achieve their educational goals in Nigeria.    Prof. B.C. Madu was former Secretary, Umuowa Students’ Union, (1972-1974); former Head, Department of Physics, Federal College of Education, Pankshin, (1985 -1989); former Coordinator, Department of Agric and Science Education, University of Agriculture, Makurdi (1990-1992); former Secretary, Science Teachers Association of Nigeria , Benue Branch, (1992-1997)\; former Chairman, Orlu Divisional Union, Nsukka branch, (2000-2004); former Examination officer, Department  of Science Education, U.N.N (1998-2008); former departmental PG Rep, former chairman, departmental time-table committee;  former Chairman, Faculty of Education Committee and former member, Senate committee on examination ( 2019-2021); former Coordinator, External Degree  Programme, U.N.N ( 2006-2008)  and finally former lecturer, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (2025-…)

He has been involved in teaching and research in the higher institutions from College of Education to Universities for 42 years Presently, member University of Nigeria Senate, Nsukka  Prof. B.C. Madu has published over 60 articles in both National and International Journals and has graduated 26 PhD and 26 Masters Degree students in both Physics Education, Measurement and Evaluation, Mathematics Education, and Institute of African Studies, U.N.N. Out of this number, two are professors in their  respective University. Prof. B.C. Madu has been involved in the accreditation and resource verification for approval of quality Science Education Programmes in 44 higher institutions in Nigeria. An external examiner for higher degrees to eight Nigerian Universities and one University in South Africa.   His research interests are on students understanding of physics concepts , developing instructional strategies for eliminating  misconceptions, developing instruments for measuring and evaluating Physics curriculum and  other education programmes. Prof. B.C. Madu is a fellow of African Academic Network and Institute of Industrial Administration.  Traditionally, is a member of Eze’s Cabinet, Umuowa Autonomous Community, as Ugwunnaya 1 of Umuowa, (2006-Date).  He is comfortably married with five children
