Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu

Areas of Interest/Summary of expertise

His general research interest for over twenty years now is in the broad area of Design of Experiments with specialty in the Combinatorial and Statistical aspects of semi-Latin squares and related designs. He also undertakes researches involving Optimization in Response Surfaces Methodology/Exploration and Operations Research, and Super Convergent Line Series.  

Activities and Responsibilities

Professor Chigbu held various administrative positions at the University of Nigeria before his current appointment. They include Coordinator, Certificate, Diploma and B.Sc. (Sandwich) programmes in Statistics and Computer Science (1998 – 2002), Acting Head of Department of Statistics (2002 – 2004), Director of Academic Planning (2009 – 2011), and Chairman of Senate Entrance Board (2009 – 2014). He also served in many committees of the university at various times. Notable amongst these are the membership of the Senate Entrance Board for three academic sessions, the Joint Council/Senate Committee on Endowment Fund (2009 – 2013), Development Committee of Senate (2008 – 2013), Joint Council and Senate Selection Board for Appointment of Vice-Chancellor (2009), the Information and Communications Technology Committee (2004 – 2009) and the Committee on the Formula for the Calculation of Excess Workload of Academic Staff (2004 – 2005). Others are the Research Grant Committee (1996 – 2002), the Scholarship Committee (1996 – 2002), and the Academic Planning Committee (1990 – 1992), all of the Faculty of the Physical Sciences. Prof. Barnabas C. Madu

Born in the family of late Mr. & Mrs. John Okehi Madu of Umulaezike, Ujah, Umuowa in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Attended primary school at St. Mary’s Primary School, Umuowa, Orlu. He went to Community Secondary School Awo Idimili in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. After his Secondary Education, he taught for eight months at Community Primary School, Mdiakaeme Ohiauchu in Aro Ndiziogu before entering Teachers Training College Azaraegbelu in Owerri for one year for pivotal teachers’ training. He graduated from the TTC in 1976 and was posted to Saint Saviors Secondary School, Umuaka to teach science subjects. He taught for one year and entered University of Ilorin, Ilorin for his degree programme in Physics Education in 1977. In 1981 he got his B.Sc. (Ed) Physics Education and was posted to Ogun State College of Education Ijebu Ode, Ogun State for his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) from August 1981 – July 1982. After the Youth Service he got an employment with Federal Ministry of Education and was posted to Federal College of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State. He went to University of Jos, Jos for his Master’s degree  programme in Science Education. After the Master’s programme he moved to University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State where he established Department of  Agric and Science Education. Later he went to University of Nigeria, Nsukka for his Ph.D in Physics Education/Measurement and Evaluation. Before he finished his Ph.D programme, University of Nigeria gave him appointment as lecturer two in 1998 to take care of Physics Education programme in the Department of Science Education. At University of Nigeria, he rose to the rank of Professor of Physics Education and Measurement Evaluation in 2011. Prof. B. C. Madu has been occupied with teaching from Primary – Secondary School – College of Education – University which involves guiding both young and old to achieve their educational goals in Nigeria.    Prof. B.C.
